The Next Big Start-UP Debuts on Channel NewsAsia

Singapore, 11 March 2014 – Regional broadcaster Channel NewsAsia presents its premier reality series, Start-UP, from 18 March 2014.The brand new four-part series tracks the journey of eight entrepreneurs giving the pitch of their lives on multiple platforms – TV, blogs, web portal and “live” web chat.

media-corp-logo-300x63The veil over the venture capital world will be lifted and viewers will gain insights into the competitive and relentless chase for seed funding in this highly entertaining programme. Follow the triumphs and heartaches of the finalists as they are mentored by two leading venture capitalists, Mr Leslie Loh of Red Dot Ventures, and Mr Eddie Chau of TNF Ventures (see Annex 1). The finalists are taken through the processes of seeking private capital, avoiding traps and pitfalls, and other dynamics of the deal making world.

The first episode will see a fast-paced and intense elimination round, where a pool of 20 contestants is whittled down to eight finalists. The finalists then go through multiple challenges each week, leading up to the finale which sees them pitching for more than SGD2 million in seed funding.

“I was impressed by the diversity of the contestants, who represent different countries and industries. I can see the fire in their bellies and some are definitely ready to be the next successful entrepreneur”, said Mr Chau of TNF Ventures.

Get to know the contestants

Viewers can get to know the contestants better through a Google Hangout session at www.thestartup.asia/hangout, which will take place immediately after the show is aired (9pm, Sin/HK/MNL time). Get the inside scoop on what happened behind the scenes from selected contestants, who will be joined by Mohan Belani, the connector in the programme. Aspiring entrepreneurs can also log on and pose questions to the mentor to gain more insights into the world of venture capital.

Vote for your favourite entrepreneur

Viewers can also root for their favourite contestant online at www.thestartup.asia. The top 20 contestants will each maintain a micro-blog, writing about their experience and thoughts on entrepreneurship. The contestant (who may not necessarily be a finalist) who generates the most traffic to his microsite and garners the most “likes” will win a coveted ad on Channel NewsAsia, which reaches nearly 50 million households and hotel rooms across 25 territories over Asia.

YES Academic Chapter ENEDA Holds Successful 2014 International Conference in Entrepreneurship

eneda_logoFebruary 6-8, 2014, ENEDA (Entrepreneurship Educators Association of the Philippines, Inc.) hosted a very successful 2014 International Conference in Entrepreneurship (ICE 2014) in Davao. ENEDA also signed the ASEAN Entrep Consortium MOA for research, student and faculty exchange programs.

The Entrepreneurship Educators’ Association of the Philippines, Inc. (ENEDA) is a partner of Young Entrepreneurs Society (YES) Philippines in promotion of entrepreneurship among the next generation. YES is the premiere network of young entrepreneurs in Asia Pacific. YES Philippines aims to give more opportunities for the entrepreneurs, help them develop skills, widen network, and help them bring ideas into life.

“Experience, Expertise and Evolution in Entrepreneurship Learning and Practice” was the theme of 2014 International Conference in Entrepreneurship (ICE 2014). It was a 3-day event that includes: Plenary Sessions at the Grand Ballroom of the Marco Polo Hotel Davao, International Night; Concurrent Industry and Academic Paper Presentations; and an Agro-Industrial Tour in Tagum City.

The event was filled with support from the local government and different individual from other countries. On the first day of the conference, Hon. Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte of Davao City, Hon. Mayor Allan T. Rellon of Tagum City, as well as Dr. Guillermo P Torres, Jr., president of University of Mindanao, sent their welcome messages to the participants. Various speakers from other countries like Singapore, Belgium, United States of America, Indonesia, United Kingdom and Australia were at the event to share their wisdom and knowledge about demography, innovation, technology, family business, creativity, human capital and other topics that have impact entrepreneurship.

Several University in the country also participated in the second day. There were representative from Colegio de San Juan de Letran, College of St. John Roxas, Far Eastern University, and Miriam College.

World StartUp Cup 2014: The Final Seven

On February 3, 2014, the World StartUp Cup announced the Final seven that will compete on March 5 and 6, 2014 in Yerevan, Armenia.

Representing the Philippines, Mr. Rey Refundo of Qwikwire, a member of Young Entrepreneur Society (YES), has been selected to continue his pitching battle with other competitors from Alexandria, Pakistan, Malaysia, St. Petersburg, Lebanon and Ghana. These finalists were chosen among 48 countries, and have a chance to win thousands of dollars in mentoring and prizes.

12 Champions of Your Big Year includes Philippines

yby_gew_cmykTwo candidates from the Philippines were chosen to compete for the grand prize of becoming the World Merit Global Ambassador.

Mark Aethan Agana is a 26 year-old MIS Specialist at Chemonics who lives in Pasig, City. His life ambition is to be the leader of a successful NGO. Mark co-founded T’nalak Youth Group, an organization that is devoted to help graduating students from public schools make it to college through a specialized tutorial. He was named as the Most Outstanding Volunteer in the youth category by the United Nations Volunteers – Philippines. Mark also founded the Re-Store Project, which has secured funding from Groupon Philippines.

Another active youth leader is Michael Suplaag. He is a Freelance Academic Coach. Michael’s life ambition is to start a business in the food industry and to work in education. His work in the Philippines and World Merit has made him appeared in local and national TV channels, radio shows, and newspapers. Michael organized “World Merit: Run to last for a lifetime 2013”, which aimed to raise funds for the improvement of a local school.

From more than 60,000 millennials, 12 Champions were selected to fly in San Francisco in November, and compete for the grand prize. Apart from Philippines, the other 10 Champions are from Iraq, USA, Canada, Liberia, Brazil, Latvia, Tunisia and Nepal.

A featured event of Global Entrepreneurship Week, World Merit focuses on helping emerging leaders – young people with the drive and willpower to make a difference. Your Big Year is a global competition focused around entrepreneurship and global citizenship. The winner will be acknowledge as the World Merit Global Ambassador, and will travel the globe to work on social impact projects and to accelerate their entrepreneurially ideas.

YES Philippines Got 2 Slots of the World’s Top 50 Startups!

Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), the largest celebration of entrepreneurship in the world, has already recognized the Top 50 innovative new companies competing in the StartUp Open competition. Among 24 countries, the Philippines got the two slots, not to mention that it is the first time for the country to join the said competition.

PageSnapp is a service that transforms a Facebook Page into a mobile commerce application instantly, and Medifund is a crowdfunding platform which supports medical students who are struggling to pay their school expenses.

Startup Open is a featured event Of GEW. It is a global competition that identifies and recognizes startup companies with high-growth potential. Winners will be announced during the Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 18-24).

YES Philippine candidate is selected for the semi-finals of Get in the Ring: The Investment Battle

getInTheRingThe Philippines has also been selected among the 60 semifinalists out of 1,000 applicants for the Get in the Ring Investment Battle in Netherlands, a pitching competition of business ideas with the grand prize of one million euros.

Noreen Bautista of Jacinto and Lirio will be representing the Philippines to showcase Filipino innovation by creating fashionable bags and accessories using indigenous materials such as plant leather made from water hyacinth.

The semi-finals will be held on the 31st of October during the Sprout Challengers Day, one of the biggest entrepreneurship events in the Netherlands. Eight finalists will be selected by an experienced jury of investors and entrepreneurs. The eight finalists will fly to the Netherlands on the 21st of November and pitch in front of top investors, who will have the vote.

The international final of Get in the Ring: The Investment Battle will be held on the 22nd of November in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Get in the Ring: The Investment Battle is a featured event of Global Entrepreneurship Week. It is a competition that gives opportunity for the startups to have contact with investors and to inspire others to start their entrepreneurial journey.

Moving Forward with Failure

small-1The Young Entrepreneur Society (YES) kicked off the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) this year with an event that celebrates failures of entrepreneurs. Failing Forward Conference was launched last October 11, 2013 and attended by almost 500 entrepreneurs and aspiring startup founders despite the rains and typhoon warnings.

Mr. Boris Joaquin, the President and Chief Equipping Officer of Breakthrough Leadership Management Consultancy, hosted the event and also shared his own failure experience. He advised audience that no one is a failure and one must move on fearlessly, manage mistakes, and follow the importance of the Golden Rule: What, How and Why, how to value relationships, and that mistakes should be kept close by just to be a good reminder.

Bestselling author Mr. Jayson Lo was the second speaker. He talked about how he hit his first million in his early 20’s, how he lost it, and how he got up from losing it in just 2 years. He inspired the audience with his words. He shared to audience that everyone is unique, that it’s okay to be afraid and to fail because virtually all great failures are character failures.

Top entrepreneur blogger and founder of the widely followed Our Awesome Planet blog site, Mr. Anton Diaz talked about the cost and benefits of travel blogging and the failures encountered by his company Mercato. He shared the lessons he learned through time from that cash flow is life blood, failure is the best market research and scale and repeatability is critical in business success. For him, distribution is the key for a cool product to succeed.

“We are in the business of making people’s tummy happy,” he said.

Founder and CEO of the Philippine’s top French Fries franchise, Potato Corner, Mr. Jose Magsaysay said that he learned that concept is not the most important thing; it is looking for a partner who can help the business succeed. Mr. Rommel Juan, CEO and founder of top Filipino food franchise said that a good decision done quickly is better than a great decision done slowly.

The emerging rockstar of Philippine startups, Mr. RJ David, founder of Sulit.com which was bought by one of the world’s largest multinational media company, Naspers shared his humble beginnings and how he managed and overcame the issues, failures and mistakes the company experienced.

Mr. Jojy Azurin, regional director for continental asia for Freelancer.com, the world’s largest freelancing, outsourcing, and crowdsourcing marketplace for small business shared some encouragement on overcoming failure and hosted a mini forum with local startups to discuss mistakes that startups should avoid.

Top motivational speaker, best-selling author and TV personality, Mr. Chinkee Tan closed the conference with powerful words of encouragement. He shared that lack of opportunities is because of lack of ideas and that people to keep on learning and ask the right question to succeed in business.

The Philippines Joins the GEW Startup Open

Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) Philippines has submitted four entries to represent Philippines to the GEW Startup Open. Gen8.ph, Tudlo.me, Cyburban.org and PageSnapp will try to get spots in the Global top 50 startups.

A startup company founded by young ladies, Gen8.ph develops and builds technologies to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Janiena Roxanne D.C. Dirain, Kristine Emy O. Matabang and Girly G. Perando project is entitled “Wearable Obstacle Detection System and Braille Cell Phone for the Blind”. The team aims to help the blind through high impact researches and innovative designs. Gen8 was incorporated on June 20, 2013.

Kristoffer Vincent M. Loremia, Raffy Englis, Eman Daryl Ycot and Lester Cabalona founded Tudlo with the idea of solving an issue of every individual that has to deal with hazards, accidents, emergencies, disasters, catastrophes and other unexpected events in human life. The company provides a state-of-the-art web and mobile application designed to be usable on the best smart phones, tablets and PCs commercialized so far. Tudlo Disaster and Emergency App aim to help individuals to be ready at any moment and give guidance all the way when disaster occurs.

Cyburban is a location-based casual adventure game. It was founded by a game master and a game builder, and was incorporated on September 3, 2013. Aristotle Bancale and Andrew Alegre’s mission is to help people remember how it feels to be a kid again. It is a Content Management System (CMS) for event marketers and tour guides. Cyburban is a DIY “Amazing Race” for mobile gadgets wherein users can add puzzles, riddles, location-based trivia, QR code scanning, GPS check-ins, and Internet-based challenges to events without additional personnel.

PageSnapp is a service that transforms a Facebook Page into a mobile commerce application instantly. It was incorporated in the Philippines last July 12, 2013. For the team behind the PageSnapp, social commerce is the next big thing, and mobile is the future. Marvin Consuegra, Rolly Rulete, Raymund Delfin and Jay Albano aim to help mobilize businesses through offering an affordable solution for small businesses to go mobile commerce.
